2008 Honorary Chair is CTV 's Michelle Toner who invites you to experience the Relay For Life. This is the Canadian Cancer Society’s unique, hope-filled community event. What makes it so special? At Relay For Life, you will:
- Celebrate the Survivors’ Victory Lap.
In addition to participating on a team, we invite all cancer survivors, whether currently in treatment or long-time recovery, to join the Victory Lap. The Survivors’ Victory Lap – the first lap of Relay For Life – gives survivors an opportunity to:
- share and celebrate success in their battle against cancer
- give hope to people living with cancer and their families
- thank everyone who helped them through their battle
- Be inspired by the Luminary Ceremony.
Luminaries are candles that are placed in special bags that bear the names of cancer survivors and loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer.
You can dedicate luminaries to remember and honour of your loved ones. You can buy luminaries at your community event or online prior to the event. Even if you are unable to attend the event, you can still purchase luminaries to pay tribute to your family members and friends who have experienced cancer.
At the event, the luminaries are lit during a moving ceremony at dusk. Your luminary and its message will provide light and inspiration for the participants all night long as they walk around the track.
- Be a part of a team and take turns walking, running or strolling around a track in a non-competitive relay.
- Stay up all night – and feel great about it.
- Give 12 hours to the fight against cancer – and it could add years to the lives of others.
- Relax and have fun off the track in the tent village.
- Learn about cancer issues and how to reduce your risk of the disease.
